Student-Led Shabbat Services

Think back for a moment to the late summer and fall of 2009, a.k.a. the end of Jewish year 5769 and the beginning of 5770. In the space of just twelve weeks, our congregation celebrated with seven B’nai Mitzvah families who had waited, quite understandably, for Rabbi Dan’s return from sabbatical. In addition, we observed the entire cycle of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah, along with Shabbat. It was an intense and joyful time, and we were blessed to return to the synagogue so frequently to celebrate each simcha and holiday as a community.

In the upcoming cold months, there will be more opportunities to gather in our warm spiritual home. There will be festive holiday observance: our delightfully home-grown learning holiday, Feast of Torah; Tu B’Shevat; and Purim are just around the corner. And during our second semester, all Religious School families are specifically asked to join in Friday night Shabbat worship. As part of our school program, grades 1 through B’nai Mitzvah will assist in leading selected portions of a Friday night Family Shabbat service. This participation reinforces the learning that takes place during the abbreviated Sunday school t’filah (prayer service). In conjunction with Abi Taylor-Abt’s monthly Shabbat  morning programs for youth, the Teen Learning Contract (TLC) students will lead a Shabbat morning service. We very much want these post-B’nai Mitzvah students to continue using the skills that they honed during their B’nai Mitzvah preparation.

Here are the dates, classes, and teachers for Friday and Saturday Shabbat services with student participation:

Fri. Jan. 15              B’nai Mitzvah class (Gideon Taylor-Abt)
Fri. Feb. 19              Grade 5 (Lorian Gans) & Grade 6 (Sharon Ledesma)
Sat. Mar. 13              Teen Learning Contract (Abi Taylor-Abt)
Fri. Mar. 19              Grade 4 (Tamara Shapiro)
Fri. Apr.16              Grade 1 (Addie Waxman) & 2/3 (Lorraine Gross)

Please join us to support and appreciate our students in action on the bimah!
