Our Oneg Hosts Part of our observance on erev shabbat -- Friday evening -- takes place in the sanctuary and the other part takes place in the social hall where we gather for oneg shabbat (Joy/Enjoyment of Shabbat). In this way we connect with our tradition as individuals and as a community. In our CABI congregation, we, the synagogue members, provide the refreshments for oneg shabbat. It is both an honor and a responsibility to create an atmosphere each week in which we can foster a real sense of Jewish community. Starting in February each member/family, along with several other members/families, is alphabetically (more or less) assigned an oneg shabbat to host this includes providing the items to be served, setting out tables, food and paper goods, and cleaning up the social hall and kitchen when the evening is over.
